Hi, to my beautiful readers. Welcome to the NESST newsletter.
In a sea of thoughts and opinions I’m grateful that you are here spending time with mine right now. My goal is to send out a newsletter every month, maybe twice a month? I dunno! I’m keeping it loose here! This particular email will be much longer than normal posts because I have to introduce everyone to What’s Going On Here.
I want to start a longer form narrative about my sewing processes that exists outside of IG posts and IG stories. As I’m sure we all do, I have *feelings* about that app, but as someone who does still need to utilize the algorithm to sell my wares to the ppl, I don’t quite know how to rid it from my life quite yet. Someday I would like to, but until then, I’m going to try shouting into this void for a bit (as well as IG).
I want to use this space as a place to share with others how things are evolving for me, how they may be staying the same, what I’m working towards. Including:
Things I’ve challenged myself with
Behind the scenes at what projects I’m working on (personal + client based)
Inspiration (maybe photos, maybe links? Only time will tell)
If that sounds worthwhile to you, consider subscribing!
One of my goals this year is to apprentice with a tailor. I’m still working out who/what/where/when that will look like, but continue reading, dear reader if you would like to know the why.
My mom introduced me to sewing when I was very young. She taught me how to use her sewing machine and helped me feel comfortable reading pattern directions from start to finish. What a gift! Life long skillset right there! She also gifted me my first sewing machine when I left home to go to college.
Everything since I’ve learned from YouTube which is an infinite wealth of knowledge for sewing. So much of my sewing practice is solitary (something I love) but I would greatly benefit from having discussions about the process and learn beyond the pace at which I type my own personal inquiries into my search bar.
I love to learn but I am not interested in going back to school so apprenticeship or mentorship or an internship for a tailor or someone who does costuming for theater all sounds cool and very fun to me. Are you someone who does costuming for theater? Hm…
SO yes, dear reader, I want to better understand fittings, shape, altering, garment construction for various sizing, the history and nuances of tailoring menswear suits and why they have basically looked the same since the dawn of time, etc.!! The world of clothes is so grand and I have burning questions!
The hope is that this will inform my practice and confidence in making clothes for others which is another one of my goals for this year.
I have a number of very exciting things I am working on for NESST that I can’t wait to share next time with you and maybe your friend or relative who you forward this email to.
Until then,
Leah Schreiber from NESST
